Local Boys League Needs New Young Referees
The Hull Boys Sunday Football League (HBSFL) is looking to recruit more referees and is offering to pay for referees courses undertaken by young people aged 14 to 17 years of age.
The HBSFL is teaming up with the East Riding County FA (ERCFA) who control referees on behalf of the Football Association to encourage youngsters to take an active part in football locally by refereeing in the Boys League.
The Referees course run by the ERCFA (on an evening or over a weekend) normally costs about £60 (sixty pounds) which includes the basic course, a safeguarding children course and a registration fee. The HBSFL had decided that it will pay in full the course fee and expects the youngster to officiate in a minimum of six games appointed by the HBSFL otherwise the fee will be repayable.
Recruitment is open to either gender including adults but particularly young people are encouraged to participate and the course fee will only be paid for those aged 14 to 17.
Keith Pinder, Secretary of the HBSFL welcomed the initiative and said, We have some excellent young referees and we are planning for the future trying to ensure that we offer the maximum number of referees possible to our local HBSFL Sunday youth teams. The opportunities are endless - possibly moving on to adult games when they are old enough and the best could end up as highly paid professionals at national or international level.
Anyone who is interested does not have to be part of the Boys League or play football even, but they should have a genuine interest in the game, be fit and be committed.
Dennis Johnson, Chief Executive of the East Riding County FA said, We welcome any initiative to increase the number of referees in the County. This scheme will hopefully encourage youngsters to take up the whistle and learn the trade in a safe, welcoming environment whilst solving the shortage problem on a Sunday morning.
