Eventually Hessle were rewarded for their good start when M. Barker hit a thunderous 25 yard shot.
Hessle seemed to take their foot of the pace of the game & gave Cave a chance to get a foot hold in the game, which they dually did, when L. Barmby finished off a well worked free kick to equalise. The game was turned upside down when Cave took the lead through C. Gorman converted penalty to give Cave a 2-1 half time lead.
Hessle started the 2nd half chasing the game, searching for the equaliser, but were dealt a bitter blow when M. Dale was sent off in the 55th minute for an alleged elbow, to leave Hessle 2-1 down & down to 10 men. To Hessle’s credit they knuckled down & found a way back in the game when T. Briggs rifled home a 20 yd volley in the 80th minute to force extra time.
Cave took the lead again when a mix up was punished by C. Gorman to restore Cave’s lead. The turning point undoubtedly was the great save by L. Picken to deny Cave extending their lead to 4-2. Hessle were looking the fitter side & having a greater share of possession & eventually equalised again when a Briggs free kick eluded everyone & finished in the back off the net 3-3.
The 2nd period of extra time both keepers pulled of miraculous saves to keep their respective sides in this enthralling cup tie. Hessle were rewarded for their endeavours in the 119th min when B. Sherwood headed home the winner from a good cross from D. Shaw at the far post to cause jubilant celebrations which resulted in Sherwood being sent off for a 2nd yellow.
A classic cup tie well refereed by Steve Wade.
